Sleepy Maggie

3 am: I remember you!
Today was a day of discovery. Meghan called, and I discovered that I can jog all the way from my apartment to Atwater Market. Wow.
I also got to see the market, which is.. like the F'ton farmer's market on steroids. I bought 10$ worth of celeral and candy.
I re-aquainted myself with Office Space this evening: Graham and Meghan joined me for pizza and a movie. I had newer stuff, but Meghan had never seen the 'Space, so we went bonkers introducing her.
I discovered that it is possible to go back to work after a movie.. I went to the library with Meghan and spent a most productive evening.
Finally, I learned that our library stays open 'till 2:30 nowadays. A feat topped only by the Tim's nearby, which goes 24/7. They know us so well!

A Girl Like Me Should Wear A Warning

I’m a gonna play wiffle ball tomorrow. Not that I really know what wiffle ball *is*, but I think it involves those hallow plastic balls with the holes through them. You know, the ones we used in gym?
Well, it promises to be fun. Especially considering the state of the field at the moment. -20 and 3 inches of snow to +13 and lots of rain.. in two days. It’s not so much a field as a lake. But we’ll be wiffling in it!
Moments like these I wish I had clothes I could get good and muddy. No, wait. Sucess! One of Dave’s shirts!
Hahaha.. it’s funny ‘cuz it’s true. Shoes will be a problem, though. Maybe I’ll just take them off. I remember with some delight the feeling of mud squising through my toes. It feels kinda good: you should try it sometime.
I am also remembering with some delight last weekend. Tonight’s entertainment in no way compares with John and Myriam :) Now, I’m wondering.. if pulling a John means “ditching your friends for gay”, did I pull a Sarah last weekend?
Speaking of which.. of all the so-called dates I’ve had lately, the guy I’m most eager to date again is furthest away. Possibly *because* he is so far away. I seem to remember having an affinity for impossible situations. I don't remember having such an affinity for breaking hearts. I should really straighten up and fly right.
le sigh.

Lend me some sugar!

I have a neighbor! Jen, one of the lovely girls from my theory class last term has moved in to the building next door. How awesome is that?! I ran into her on MSN this evening, which is when she invited me over for tea. Her roomate owns this condo, so her place actually looks like somewhere people really live, rather than a temporary student-type thing.
Best of all it's so *convenient*. I can be there in 3 minutes flat. I predict a few more late-night chats before the end of term. Which is only 2 weeks away!
Now, this has been the best term ever in terms of courses, so I can be excused for getting a little sentimental. Most of what I didn't like about McGill dissapeared this term, so I can honestly say I will miss it. English most especially: law doesn't leave much room for literary interpretation. Maybe I can make a hobby of it...

4th day running!

Hey all!
I just thought I'd post while I'm still concious in any meaningful way. So.. this marks the 4th day running that I go to bed past 3 am. This is most definitely a good thing.
Absolute props go to John, to whom we [Merriam and I] owe a debt for getting us into Unity [a totally happenin' gay bar]. I am also forever thankful I had y'all over, because that was a pefectly partying, perfectly flirtin', perfectly Eastern weekend. As Jay said in CUSIDEast, we miss you already!
So, given the choice, would you come again? I would definitely love to have you, that's for sure. Wouldn't mind hosting some of Dal too ;)
Yes, well, Friday and Saturday night were lovely nats-related parties. Good dancing, good food, good foozball. Last night was *supposed* to be the beginning of work on my Shakespeare paper.. but I had some fun instead.
I finally sat down to write at about 9. pm. Good thing this class is pass/fail, huh? But here's the thing: even writing the paper was fun. No stress at all. I guess I'm still basking in the afterglow.
3 am looks fun.. maybe I'll stay.

What’s the sound of one hand clapping?

In our discussion of Othello in today’s Shakespeare seminar my professor made a pleasing observation. A character, I can’t remember who, says something to the effect that “I wish that I were you, for I cannot kiss myself”. This guy is a narcissist, to say the least.
Anyway, Wes asked if that really were impossible. After all, when our lips are closed aren’t we kissing ourselves?
Think about it. Then feel it. As you become aware of the feeling of both lips pressing each other...bam! Feels like a kiss, don’t it?
Just as talking about blinking makes you blink more, talking about lips will make you more aware of them. Psyche!

Anticlimactic

According to Montreal, today is St. Patrick's day. Which is interesting for we, the university population, because this means we effectively get to celebrate the event twice. See, Montreal schedules it's parade [3rd biggest in North America, after NY and Chicago] on the weekend. And most working-types can't drink their faces off on a Wednesday. So they drank their faces off today.
Ahh, but here at McGill we make our own schedules. We can drink whenever we like!
If you happen to prefer being sober, as I usually do, this is still quite entertaining, as you get to observe respectable people making fools of themselves, which is what I've always liked best about a good party.
Anyways... in the course of the parade I had the good fortune to see Mr. Paul Martin, marching as part of the LaSalle delegation. Mr. Martin is, of course, the MP for LaSalle which helps explain why such an ordinary riding should have such an extraordinary pool [apparently the facility boasts two olympic-sized basins.]
At any rate, I was disappointed in Mr. Martin's lack of entourage. I wonder if it's a poor reflection on Canada, that no one would bother assassinating our leader, and thus he merits no security at all?

PS: full points to Mary! She wins the prize! These brownies can be as special as you want.. however my job application requires me to abstain. They test us for drugs, so now would be a bad time to start. For me. But not to worry: these brownies are almost a drug in of themselves.. mmmm.

Tapping the World

Pop quiz: who wrote "the island"?
You know what I'm talking about. The song that goes: we are an island / a rock in a stream / We are a people / as proud as there's been.
Here's the thing: I've got a song assigment in my Atlantic Canada class on Tuesday. And I really want to do the Cape Breton anthem. Matt Howat already did Sloan and the Halifax sound, so I'm gonna go for more traditional.
But I don't know who wrote this song! What album was it on? How can I get a copy? I'm willing to buy the CD at HMV if all else fails, but the internet has yielded remarkably dissapointing results. I don't even know what CD to look for.
10 points to whoever answers first. And by 10 points I mean a promise of home-made sarahbrownies. Mmmm.

Spottle: winning the academic lottery since 1995.

I remember my first encounter with Academic BS. It was in my grade 8 year at Malcolm Munroe. Social studies winter exam. The question: “What year did the french government institutionalize ‘les filles du roi’?” My answer: an extended rant on women’s rights with special reference to the 18th century. The reason: I had no idea as to specific year in question. I hadn’t studied. The result: 105% on the exam, with a little note in the upper right corner “this answer is consistent with that of a university student.”
Ah, Academic BS. I am both thankful and resentful. I just got back my first paper in Film Noir. An incomprehensible A.
I remember this paper. I had two papers due that week, both of which were supposed to be written on the weekend. I was a wreck that weekend! These papers are crap!
I’m angry because these marks shake my faith in the system. I mean, I worked hard on this paper, but only because I was such a mess. It wasn’t by any means quality. Not by my standards, anyway. But I got one of 10 A’s in my class. The average was B-. It’s madness!
No, I’m seriously pissed. When I think of all those times I’ve poured hours of thought and planning into B + papers... what’s the lesson? Nothing matters! There is no good and evil, no hard work and slacking, no beauty and ugliness.
/me’s head explodes.

Is it Thursday Already?

Holy crap. That went by fast.
For those of you waiting with baited breath, I did get the Dickens done on time. As a matter of fact, I wrote the paper twice. That's right: twice. My first 4 pages didn't satisfy me, so I started over around 9 pm. I must say, it was a complete sucess.
To explain, Wednesday was wonderful. I slept so late I'm almost embarrased to say: 11. Which is actually kinda rare for me nowadays, so I enjoyed it with relish. The interesting side-effect was my utter wakefullness at 3 am. The paper was finished.. and I still had time and energy to revise it.
Either it's really good or really bad :)
Now I've gotta get to bed, because the van leaves at 10:30 tomorrow. Before I go.. a little something to induce some Montreal envy:
This is how I spent my Saturday night.. and Sunday morning. Specifically, four of us went skating in the old port, then tried all of the rest. I'm gonna miss this town: all night parties, free activities.. it's like safegrad with beer.

Ottawa, again!

First things first: check out my new link! Weebl and Bob: very very funny. Courtesy of Caitlin from my old Y job :)
Man.. I love that feeling when I get home and there's like, 5 new messages on my machine. I've gotta say, at first I had a bit of a social void to fill. But my patience has totally paid off. Should I go to debating Thursday, or play Risk with the Charles posse? I know: do both! Should I have dinner with Elyse tomorrow night, or watch French new wave film with Rux? I know: do both! Should I watch West Wing with the Can. studies group Wednesday, or watch Law and Order with Katherine? Umm... tough choice, actually. Probably neither.. because of Dickens!
I would worry about my Dickens paper due Thursday, except.. I probably wouldn't be working on it even if my time were free. Better spend the time breaking hearts, kicking ass and taking names.
Speaking of kicking ass.. I'm going debating this weekend! In Ottawa! Craziness: David will think I've moved. Maybe we can have a squash rematch!
What else... um, it's spring in Montreal? 8 degrees! I spent the whole day out and about. Apart from a tennis match and a conference, I was outside the whole time. Despite my best efforts, no sunburn yet :)
I'm sorry I didn't go to Halifax. It was kinda, well, awkward with Mom visiting. At the same time, some pretty wonderful things happened over the weekend.. so I'm glad I saved my travel voucher for my next vacation. Easter maybe. Or post-exam, pre-job! I hope I didn't let everyone down in the 'fax too bad. Y'all have been really awesome. I hope, if and when I get into Dahl law, we can celebrate together.
