Tuesday, January 20, 2004Where do you get a gun in Canada?
The first murder of the year on the island of Montreal took place Sunday night.
Last night, however, a man was murdered a block away from my house. Shot in his apartment, 26 years old. How does this happen here? I thought it was supposed to be nearly impossible to buy a gun in Canada, and I'm pretty sure it's really hard to get one across the border. Am I just being naive? I thought we were safe from guns here, more so than in the states. I guess it's just too close. Killed in his apartment, which is awefully close by [Lorne St., for those of you familiar with the McGill student ghetto]. I don't feel as safe as I once did. I'm luckier than most: my building is full of "real people", non-students. The security is pretty good. But I just don't like it. I'm living on my own, whether I like it or not. But next year, I think I'm gonna get the roomate I was counting on. Maybe I'll be in Halifax, maybe I can move in with one of you :) Either way, I think I'll feel a little less unsettled. Liberal McGill was wonderful, incidently. I really haven't taken advantage of Gerts, and I think perhaps I should while I'm here. Also met with some of the DU crowd, since the philosophy students association was also having an event. Coincidence? Perhaps, but we all ended up making fun of dubbya together. 0 comments
