Gettin' into the groove

Finally, I recognize myself again.
Today I passed up a social event. First time since... the incident. Anyway, I feel like my old self again. You know, sufficiently comfortable with myself that I'm willing to spend an afternoon alone with my thoughts. I mean, it was supposed to be an afternoon alone with my reading, but when has that ever happened?
Point being, I am feeling, as the french say it "bien dans ma peau". Literally translated it means "well in my skin", but you get the picture. Comfortable. Not afraid of spending time alone. Going out every night just isn't me. For a while it was good, and I'm going to try to do it more often, just not as frequently. Maybe twice a week and weekends.
I just realized, however, that warroom started at 7, not 8. I'm gonna go buy some cookies and drop in. Whoopsie.

Where do you get a gun in Canada?

The first murder of the year on the island of Montreal took place Sunday night.
Last night, however, a man was murdered a block away from my house. Shot in his apartment, 26 years old.
How does this happen here? I thought it was supposed to be nearly impossible to buy a gun in Canada, and I'm pretty sure it's really hard to get one across the border. Am I just being naive? I thought we were safe from guns here, more so than in the states.
I guess it's just too close. Killed in his apartment, which is awefully close by [Lorne St., for those of you familiar with the McGill student ghetto]. I don't feel as safe as I once did. I'm luckier than most: my building is full of "real people", non-students. The security is pretty good. But I just don't like it. I'm living on my own, whether I like it or not. But next year, I think I'm gonna get the roomate I was counting on. Maybe I'll be in Halifax, maybe I can move in with one of you :) Either way, I think I'll feel a little less unsettled.
Liberal McGill was wonderful, incidently. I really haven't taken advantage of Gerts, and I think perhaps I should while I'm here. Also met with some of the DU crowd, since the philosophy students association was also having an event. Coincidence? Perhaps, but we all ended up making fun of dubbya together.

Where *is* everybody?

Alright everybody. What's with the lack of updates? Get crackin'!
Let's see... well, tonight is a fun event by Liberal McGill. We're going to watch Bush's state of the union address. Liberal McGill makes this fun by combining the speech with a drinking game. Everytime Bush says "terror" or "crisis" or any of another list of words, we all get another shot of free beer.
Sounds like fun. I'm not sure if I'll be drinking... it's too dry and wintery to risk a huge hangover. I dunno, in this kind of weather the headache would just be worse, y'know?
I'm still pretty upset... but like I said, you guys have been great. I'm not sure what will happen as time goes on, but I feel better knowing I've got good friends to hang out with and talk to. Thanks!

Funner than I thought

Sometimes you just have to balance things in your mind. And tonight, going to the DU exec meeting seemed funner than coming home. And I was right, it was. I'm glad to be getting more involved.
They're being very fabulous. Lots to do, too. This weekend is Winter Carnival. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be seeing any of my UNB friends. You're right, it is prohibitively expensive for smaller clubs. Let's hope you guys grow by leaps and bounds as the years pass!
Tomorrow is a liberal McGill drinking function. It actually sounds quite fun. We go to Gerts to see Bush's state-of-the-union address. Everytime he says something from a pre-determined list: "crisis" "fiscal responsability" and so on, we are to have another shot of beer.
I don't think it would take very long to get loaded at all, so I'll probably be abstaining for the most part. Still, sounds like a fun time! Not only will we be debating US policy, we'll do so while drunk! It'll probably make more sense that way.

The return of looser

In the summer of '97 I missed half the seminar. But it remains a very big part of my memories of high school. Even though I missed half of it, I've heard about pretty much all of it. Especially the legend of looser.
Aparently, the summer school kids didn't appreciate us smartie-pants running around the academy for fun. Either way, when we left on the bus for a hike to Pollet's Cove, they held up a sign in the window, proclaiming us to be "loosers".
Pretty funny. I never thought I would see that spelling again, but I did today: in the Concordia women's washrooms, written on the inside of a stall. Yes, even university students can misspell, and in a funny way, too.
Wonderful news! I *did* break for public speaking finals. Spent the night dancing in celebration. Cross your fingers!

Best McIbbons Ever

Whoever said you don't need to drink to have a good time got it right.
I just spent the most wonderful evening in the company of real and true friends, and it feels great. You know what makes it really special? The people I didn't know before I went. I can still schmooze like the best of 'em, and that feels good.
I think we won our first and only round tonight, so we're 1 up. My partner is a jem, so we'll definitelly make the best of a good opportunity here. We're debating pretty well, considering how rusty I was, or am.
Who knows? Maybe we'll break. Maybe I'll do well in public speaking. ther way, I'm very glad I went.
Happy Birthday, Graham. Tonight was your surprise birthday party, and I was there in spirit. Next time we're out, you can have a round on me :)

My kingdom for MSN

I really hate McGill's computer policies. Apparently over the holidays they completely eliminated MSN from every computer on campus. That's BULLshit.
First of all, MSN really isn't as much of a timewaster as it once was. I do actually use it for legitimate purposes, from time to time. I certainly do as of late, when I finally got it to work on my Mac again.
Second of all, I really can't just wait 'till I get home to message people. People are on-line in the early morning. This is prime chatting time. And I'm almost always at school by now.
McGill is trying to isolate me! I fight back with reckless abandon.
So this is my stopgap solution. You know, blogging. It's really not the same, but it's better than silence.
So let's see... what's new? Well, I'm over-the-moon excited about seeing a certain someone again. Soooo excited!
And I'm going to a debating tournament too. The first annual Concordia women's tournament, to be precise. I'm meeting with my partner in 10 minutes to prep some cases.
Last night I learned a new definition of pain while getting to Caitlin's housewarming party. -30 [without windchill, wussies] for ten minutes in considerable wind. Couldn't feel my legs.
Consequently, I'm going to be asking people to provide details about weather exposure from now on before I agree to a get-together. If this happens again I might become a hermit ever after.
I certainly wish going to a California university were an option. But I guess I'll have to settle for the east coast for a warmer Canadian climate.

Squush

I apparently have a talent for squash. I kid you not. It has something to do with my tallness.
I find the sport a little futuristic. You play this raquet sport entirely enclosed in a white room.. you can bounce the ball off any of the walls.. I dunno, it just seems weird.
But I'm pretty good, for a beginner. I started my lessons today. Has anyone seen the Royal Tannenbaums? Well, our coach looks like the tennis guy. He even has the same glasses, minus the tint.
It's -25 degrees. I have picked the worst season possible to get out and get involved. Freezing my nippers off.

Splooge!

Mmmm...nachos and Pirates of the Carribian. Yumy yumy.
Went over to Graham's for supper and some vegging last night. I beat Graham and Caitlin once as Kirby in Super Smash brothers. Sarah 1, everyone else 3: my average is slowly improving :)
In defiance of this shitty weather, Graham, Caitlin, Bob and miselaneous others are going out tomorrow night too, at a bar no less. No one seems to remember exactly where McLean's is, but I'm sure we'll find it before we freeze to death.
Caitlin's also slated me for a party Thursday night too. This whole Tuesday Thursday schedule kicks ass! Especially with such little homework. So, yes, a housewarming party for Caitlin is in order, and I hear she'll have a gamecube by Thursday: the losing streak continues.
Thanks to everyone for your help so far. You all rock! Friends in Montreal have been keeping me busy, inviting me out, and you guys are fabulous for the support. Now I'm off to the University activities night, see if I can't score some free cookies from the McGill DU.

The News Is Bad

A very bad thing has happened to me personally, and I've been struggling with it ever since Tuesday. This has made it difficult to post, because I don't know what to say about myself. My thoughts are naturally circling and centering on this one specific thing, but this is a personal issue: it would be bad netiquette to post about it online.
On the other hand, I have no wish to isolate myself. Now, more than ever, I appreciate my friends. You guys are a great way to get my mind off things, and, sometimes when I really need it, you offer great support.
So I've decided I'm not going to stop posting, even if I'm feeling absolutely wonky all the time.
What I am going to do write about everything but what my mind focuses on non-stop. In other words, my Blog will be about my everyday.
If, on the other hand, I need to talk about the other thing I'll call you, if that's ok.
In everyday news, I got my marks back: 3 B+s and 2 A-s! A great term! And this term's classes are pretty cool. I'm taking this "graduate seminar" on Shakespearian studies. There are actually no graduate students in it, but there are 8 undergrads. 8! The professor's going to have us out to supper! This is awesome!
Likewise with my "Understanding Atlantic Canada" course. 8 people, talking about Atlantic Canada, a 400 level class: awesomeness!
